The Innovator Founder route is designed specifically for innovative businesses with genuine potential for growth. Simply owning a business, being self-employed or operating a profitable company does not, by itself, meet the requirements.
For a new venture, the business plan needs to demonstrate a genuine and original proposition that addresses a market need or creates a meaningful competitive advantage. The opportunity must also be realistic and achievable, with a credible pathway towards development, job creation and growth in the UK and potentially international markets.
This means a conventional business model may not be suitable unless there is a genuine innovation at its core. Can an Existing Business Apply?
An existing business may be suitable for the Innovator Founder route, but the right approach depends on your circumstances and the business you are looking to develop in the UK.
The Immigration Rules make a distinction between establishing a new business and continuing an existing business, with specific requirements applying to each route. For an existing venture, factors such as its trading history, sustainability, progress and achievements against the business plan can be important.

Do I Need Endorsement?
Yes, endorsement is a key part of the Innovator Founder route. Before applying for the visa, your business proposition must be assessed and supported by an approved endorsing body. The endorsing body considers whether your proposed venture meets the relevant requirements of the route.
Importantly, a professionally prepared business plan is not the same as an endorsement. Your plan needs to present your business proposition clearly and credibly, while the final endorsement decision rests with the approved endorsing body.
Your own involvement also matters. You should be genuinely behind the business idea, or have made a significant contribution to its development, and have an active day-to-day role in building and managing the venture.

Investment, Duration & Settlement
How Much Investment Is Required?
There is not a universal fixed investment amount stated in the Innovator Founder Immigration Rules for every business. However, the applicant must be able to demonstrate that the business plan is realistic and achievable based on available resources.
Where investment or other funding is required, the source and availability of the funds should be considered as part of the business planning and endorsement process. Financial projections should therefore be based on the actual requirements of the proposed business rather than an arbitrary investment figure.
How Long Can You Stay?
The Innovator Founder visa can normally give you permission to stay in the UK for up to 3 years, giving you time to build, develop and grow your business.
Your journey does not end when the visa is granted. You will be expected to demonstrate meaningful progress through regular contact with your endorsing body, including key checkpoints around 12 and 24 months. If your business continues to meet the relevant requirements, the route can provide opportunities to extend your stay.
Can Innovator Founder Visa Lead to ILR?
Yes, for many founders, the Innovator Founder route can be a pathway towards UK settlement. One of the most attractive features of the route is the potential to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) after 3 years, provided you meet the relevant settlement requirements.
To progress towards settlement, you will need to demonstrate that your venture has achieved the required level of growth, development and business success, supported by the appropriate endorsement. You will also need to meet the other applicable settlement requirements, including residence and the Life in the UK Test, where required.
Can My Family Join Me?
Eligible partners and dependent children may be able to apply to join or remain with an Innovator Founder visa holder as dependants. Each dependant must satisfy the relevant immigration requirements.
